Think your parking ticket is unfair? Here is what to do.
Challenging a parking charge is mostly about three things: knowing which kind of notice you have, working to the right deadline, and putting a specific, evidenced point in writing. This page covers all three.
Check your deadline before you do anything else
Parking notices carry time limits, and many offer a reduced amount if you pay quickly. Challenging can affect that reduction, so the dates printed on your own notice should drive your decision — not anything you read on a website, including this one.
Six things that decide how an appeal goes.
- 01
Identify the notice
Council Penalty Charge Notice or private Parking Charge Notice? Everything else follows from this. The issuer's name on the notice tells you.
- 02
Note every date
Write down the date of the contravention, the date of issue, and every deadline mentioned. Appealing can affect a reduced amount, so the timings matter.
- 03
Gather your evidence
Photographs of the signs and your bay, payment receipts or app history, permits, and anything showing where you actually were and when.
- 04
Challenge the issuer first
Both routes start with the organisation that issued the notice. Independent appeals services generally will not look at a case until the issuer has formally rejected it.
- 05
Be specific, be brief
One clear factual point with evidence behind it beats five pages of general unfairness. Only include what you can support.
- 06
Escalate if rejected
A rejection letter should tell you which independent service covers your case and how long you have. That service is free to the motorist.
Which route applies to you?
Council notices and private charges are challenged in different places. Start with whichever describes your notice.

Charges issued on private land are a claim under the terms on the signs — not a fine. That changes how you challenge them.
